Today, the Boston Globe ran a story about an American couple who, at great personal risks to themselves, went to Europe to help rescue Jews and others from the horror of the impending Holocaust. They are being honored in Israel as Righteous Gentiles, and surviving family members are being flown to Israel for the ceremony.
They will be only the second and third Americans so honored since most Righteous Gentiles are Europeans or Russians who acted to save Jews, often under the noses of the Nazis. I think it is worth pondering that the heroic designation of Righteous Gentiles — those who bravely act to protect innocent Jews from anti—Semitism — should not be just reserved for historical figures. For in a sense they live among us now — regardless of what some hyperbolic commentators suggest. Many Christians are involved in pro—Israel efforts, and they deserve our recognition and gratitude. Many are involved in one of our favorite charities: The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. I am a supporter and have met many Righteous Gentiles who are Standing up for and with Israel and for the safety and well—being of the Jewish people. History is being made right now.
