Troop Deaths Drop in September
Despite increased combat operations, the number of US troops killed in action in September dropped to the lowest level in almost a year:
Overall last month, 63 Americans died, according to the latest Defense Department releases.In August, 84 soldiers lost their lives in Iraq.
A U.S. soldier was killed Sunday in a small-arms attack during combat operations in eastern Baghdad, the military said Monday. The soldier, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was assigned to the Multi-National Division-Baghdad.
The death toll is the lowest since July 2006, when 43 Americans died in Iraq.
While the figures are good news, what is important is that the trend in combat deaths for US forces has been going down since July. That certainly reflects the success we've been having in cleaning out areas formerly controlled by insurgents or al-Qaeda.
