Good news! Obama to OK Iranian enrichment program
I guess all that talk about "all options are on the table" when it came to the Iranian drive to build a bomb was just campaign rhetoric after all.
It appears that the Obama Administration will acquiesce in making Iran's dream come true; we will step aside and allow them to develop the most destructive weapon known to man to have at the disposal at the most unbalanced regime on the planet:
As part of a policy review commissioned by President Barack Obama, diplomats are discussing whether the US will eventually have to accept Iran’s insistence on carrying out the process, which can produce both nuclear fuel and weapons- grade material.
"There’s a fundamental impasse between the western demand for no enrichment and the Iranian demand to continue enrichment,” says Mark Fitzpatrick, a former state depart- ment expert now at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “There’s no obvious compromise between those two positions.”
The US has insisted that Iran stop enrichment, although Mr Fitzpatrick notes that international offers put to Tehran during George W. Bush’s second term as president left the door open to the possible resumption of enrichment.
“There is a growing recognition in [Washington] that the zero [enrichment] solution, though still favoured, simply is unfeasible,” says Trita Parsi, president of the National Iranian American Council. “The US may still have zero as its opening position, while recognising it may not be where things stand at the end of a potential agreement.”
Mr Fitzpatrick adds: “Obviously, no country wants to flag its fallback positions in advance. As soon as you let your falback position be known, it becomes the new position.”
Does anyone really believe that our "fallback" position won't be to accept as a fait accompli the Iranian enrichment program? In fact, don't be surprised if the Obama Administration offers this carrot unilaterally and with no reciprocity demanded from the Iranians. They have already unilaterally guaranteed the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic with a no invasion pledge. God knows what they're doing behind the scenes in cutting off support for various groups fighting the mullahs.
There has been a subtle change in our rhetoric about Iran that has gone from the flat statement that they wish to produce a bomb to Obama's squishier formulation that they wish to develop the "capability" to build a bomb. The latter sets us up to acknowledge Iran's right to enrich uranium - a climb down that grants the mullahs carte blanche to do anything they want with their low grade uranium they've already enriched not to mention piling on centrifuges to massively increase the 5500 they already have in place at the facility in Nantanz until they have the planned 50,000 centrifuges up and running. That would give them the capability of making 20 -30 bombs a year.
What does Obama hope to gain? An historic agreement that would have the Iranians promising to help us in Iran and Afghanistan while we recognize their sphere of influence in the Gulf and allow them to enrich uranium to their heart's content.
Obama the peacemaker - giving us the peace of the grave.
