When Gas Hits $3 a Gallon Who Will Be Blamed?
When gas tops three dollars a gallon and beyond, will the media blame Obama as it did Bush?
On Obama’s inauguration day the average price of a gallon of gasoline in the US was about $1.80. It’s been climbing ever since.
Let’s review the news from the past.
On April 26, 2006, the Gallup News Service, in an article entitled “High Gas Prices Could Fuel a Further Decline in Bush’s Ratings,” the author wrote:
“[T]he prospect of gas prices averaging more than $3 per gallon nationwide this summer could cause Bush's rating to sink even further. In the past, presidents have not fared well when gas prices were high. In fact, some of the lowest presidential approval ratings Gallup has ever recorded were measured at times when the nation faced a gas crisis. High gas prices hit Americans in their pocketbooks, and the tendency has been for them to take out this frustration on government leaders.”
The Democrats were relentless in blaming Bush for high gas prices. This from The Democratic Party website on April 27, 2006:
“Since he first ran for President in 2000, President Bush has offered a number of different explanations for what he can and cannot do to help the millions of hard-working Americans deal with out-of-control gas prices. With gas prices topping $3 per gallon in many parts of the country, it is more important than ever that the Bush Administration show real leadership and help alleviate the growing economic strain on Americans.”
Senator Barbara Mikulski (Maryland-D) was quoted in an MSNBC piece dated April 25, 2006, as saying,
‘“What happened to Iraq oil, Mr. President? You said Iraqi oil would pay for the war. Ain’t seen no money. Ain’t seen no oil,’ Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland said. ‘Families are gripped by the fear of rising gas prices,’ she added.
At the same news conference, New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez proposed a 60-day suspension of the gasoline tax, saying the money could be recovered by repealing tax breaks for energy companies. He scoffed at Bush’s call to curb tax breaks for the oil companies.”So as gas prices climb this summer, who do you suppose will be blamed by the Democrats and the MSM? You have one guess.
