National Guard headed soon to the streets of Chicago?
It's no great secret that, despite draconian gun laws in many urban centers, a significant number of major cities in America have large sections that exist as bywords to the tragic and misguided failure of LBJ's Great Society and the resulting nightmare of violence and despair.
In a possible precedent-setting response, several Chicago Pols are openly calling for help in the form of National Guard troops patrolling the streets of the Windy City to combat the surge in violence.
Michelle Ruiz of AOL News has the details:
Two Chicago lawmakers want the National Guard brought in to help fight a surge of violent crime in the city, saying there is a "war" in Chicago that warrants the same kind of deployment as the U.S. has in the streets of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Democratic state Reps. John Fritchey and LaShawn K. Ford are urging Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis, Mayor Richard Daley and Gov. Pat Quinn to order the Illinois National Guard to Chicago, where 113 people have been killed in shootings, stabbings, beatings and other violent crimes in 2010. The death toll at this time last year was 105.
At a news conference Sunday, Fritchey and Ford said the violence in Chicago this year has claimed the same number of lives as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, although U.S. military officials report 133 American troops have been killed in 2010.
At a time when the orbit of national politics in the US revolves around the Chicago Way, the specter of National Guard troops conducting patrols and sweeps through the South Side is tragic irony and a testament to the abject failure of the liberal urban and social policies of the past 40 years.
The fact that statistically-speaking an American would be safer at night on the streets of Baghdad or Kabul than parts of Chicago is damning evidence that liberal policy has failed the residents of our inner cities.
If Chicago first, then will the National Guard or eventual Civilian Security Force patrolling the neighborhoods of Detroit, Los Angeles, or Brooklyn be far behind?
