Thoughts on the defeat of Specter

It has been a long time coming for Senator Arlen Specter.  After 30 years in the Senate, Arlen Specter was forced to give his first concession speech to Congressman Joe Sestak.  As I watched the video late last night I had two thoughts.

First, I was elated to finally see the epitome of a career politician dethroned. Congressman Joe Sestak is a man whom the Democratic Party tried to sweep under the rug for Senator Specter yet Sestak overcame this obstacle to win the primary.

My second thought, as I watched Senator Specter close to tears on TV, I had wished that he would have won for my own selfish reason.  My hope was to see Pat Toomey beat Senator Specter in November.  I believe it would have a sent a clear message to not only the Democrat party, but also to the Republican Party that the politics of the past is over.  The Pennsylvania State Committee had endorsed Arlen Specter in 2004 which resulted in a nail biter primary where Toomey was two points from winning the primary over endorsed candidate Specter.

It was amazing to see the fall of Senator Specter. On primary day you could feel his anxiety as he was constantly sending Tweets urging constituents to go vote.  At one point he began tweeting in Spanish to bring out the Hispanic community to vote.  With only a short time until the polls closed he Tweeted , "115 minutes left to vote in today's primary election." It was almost agonizing to see.  As I worked my precinct Democrats told me it was time for Specter to go.  One elderly woman told me Specter "was too old and needs to go."  The resentment clearly ran deep on both sides of the aisle.

So here we are.  Senator Specter has now been reduced to a lame duck.  As excited as I am to see the Senator dethroned, I find it a little bittersweet.  Yes, he will no longer be in office, but Pennsylvania will be paying his 7 figure pension from here on out.  I can't say we exactly won.  I leave asking this, Senator Specter will you not take your pension to benefit the taxpayers of Pennsylvania?  Senator?
