The road to Utopia

Oh, those glorious days of yester month... was it only a few months ago that the lefties in Washington were in heaven? They had control of the entire government, their president was a beloved figure around the world, and they could finally get on with the business of perfecting America and turning her into a Utopian paradise. By gum, they were at last going to realize their dreams.

After perfecting America, they would move on swiftly to perfecting the world, and after that, perhaps turn their attention to the universe. Maybe they could get Obama to talk that menacing black hole sitting out there in the center of the Milky Way Galaxy to, you know, stop being so menacing. A god can do that, can't he?

Do you remember the giddiness as Obama signed one massive spending bill after another? The ecstasy as he signed the 2000 page healthcare bill into law? There they all were...Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Hoyer, Dodd, Frank, Schumer, and a host of other lefties cheering, clapping, backslapping, and grinning like Cheshire cats. The excitement! The euphoria! The wonder of it all!

July 2010; the road to Utopia is dotted with potholes. Obama and his cohorts are at war with pretty much everyone on the planet, including each other; wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, war with Arizona and the other states that support Arizona's immigration law, war in the form of lawsuits from around 21 additional states that are challenging the healthcare law, war with Louisiana and the other Gulf states over the ineptitude of the government in the oil spill mess, war with businesses by imposing additional taxes, mandates, and regulations, war with the Tea parties.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has passed a law saying that no resident of the state will be required to purchase health insurance, a direct poke in the eyes of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi.

Race relations are deteriorating; the word racist is thrown around recklessly any time any one dares offer a word of dissent to the Obama agenda.

Consumer confidence is sinking. A majority of Americans think the country is on the wrong track.

The economy is stagnant, unemployment remains high, businesses are fearful of when the next government intervention will hit, spending is wildly out of control, and the deficit is soaring past $1 trillion dollars a year for as far as the eye can see.

Erskine Bowles, Obama's handpicked guy to address the deficit, says in effect that the deficits are in danger of wrecking the nation; that the deficits are a cancer that will destroy us from within.

Democrats up for reelection are cranky. They complain that Obama is not doing enough to help them get reelected. Maybe they remember his boast that this would not be like 1994 when Dems were sent packing during the Clinton administration. Obama reportedly told them "don't worry; this time you've got me." (Memo to Dems; did you check the expiration date on that promise? He doesn't care about you. You are just cannon fodder to be used by him to advance his agenda.)

Members of the press have their panties in a twist. Obama isn't paying any attention to them and goes out of his way to avoid them; this, after they poured their very hearts and souls into getting him elected. They are sounding like jilted lovers. Live and learn, my friends, live and learn.

The Euros are fed up with his annoying lecturing, and are telling him to butt out. Hey, Euros! You should be thankful you are not us; we have to listen to him every day.

Is this what Utopia looks like? Are we there yet?
