Discovery Channel hopes to 'lock up' new talent

The folks on the left coast never disappoint. For viewers who just can't get enough of "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars," the creative gurus at Investigation Discovery are developing two new series that will offer a novel new twist to the original formats. Hollywood Reporter tells us.

At the Television Critics Association's press tour in Beverly Hills, the Discovery-branded crime network announced it's developing a singing competition titled "Talent Behind Bars," and another show called "Dancing Behind Bars."

The jail cell venue would provide an ideal setting for budding Elvis impersonators to perform "Jailhouse Rock" and should inspire creative competition for young felons to rap their rap sheet. On the other hand "Dancing Behind Bars?" Does anyone at Discovery really think viewers will tune in to watch prisoners dancing?

Some of the edginess that potential viewers might expect will be missing as prisoners who have been convicted of major violent crimes will not be allowed to participate, sorry Charlie (Manson). The competition will be limited to lesser criminals like petty thieves and small time drug dealers.

Here's a thought, if your "American Idol" audition doesn't work perhaps you could find a way to get sent to jail where you may get a second chance.
