Obama Throws a Khattalah Bone

In response to the announcement about the apprehension of Ahmed Abu Khatallah in Libya, President Obama boasted:

With this operation, the United States has once again demonstrated that we will do whatever it takes to see that justice is done when people harm Americans. We will continue our efforts to bring to justice those who were responsible for the Benghazi attacks. We will remain vigilant against all acts of terrorism, and we will continue to prioritize the protection of our service-members and civilians overseas[.]

I admit, it is a good thing that Khatallah is in U.S. custody, and thanks go to our servicemen and the intelligence community for a job well done – albeit way behind the eight ball, considering that this man has been in plain view since the September 11, 2012 attack.  And what about the others responsible for the Benghazi attack?  Are they being pursued, or is this just a bone the administration is throwing at us to get us off the scent while it is drowning in disapproval?

Rest assured, the prolonged delay was due to a reluctance – for whatever reason – on the part of the White House and not the boots on the ground or eyes and ears of the intelligence community.  Although I suppose someone could make the case that they have been tailing Khatallah for the last 642 days in an effort to unearth valuable intelligence on terrorist networks in Libya.  It could be true, you know.

As I said, it is admittedly a good thing he was apprehended, although, gee, the timing of his “capture” is suspect given that he was within arm’s reach for the last 642 days and no one bothered to do anything about it – despite repeated promises from Obama to “bring to justice those responsible for the Benghazi attacks” and to remain “vigilant against all acts of terrorism.”  Does anyone find it ironic that the cries of Sean Smith’s mom and the appeals of Tyrone Woods’s dad have miraculously been answered after 642 days, just as the VA and IRS scandals blow up in Obama’s face and the Bergdahl return is received by the public with a big “OMG, you did what?!”

And it’s a good thing even though average Americans barely paying attention knows enough to question the wisdom of trying this murderous terrorist like a common thug in federal district court, where, in addition to being Mirandized, he will be entitled to all manner of constitutional protections and standards regarding the admissibility and weight of  evidence that differ considerably from those in military courts.  Yeah, we got Khatallah, but in the end, it might be Khatallah who gets us.

It was a good thing to get this guy, but what’s stuck in my craw is that the blatant hypocrisy seems so overused these days.  Maybe it’s the blatant disregard the Obama administration has for the intelligence of those of us who are paying attention and the unmistakable disdain he demonstrates toward the people – congratulating himself for bringing Khatallah to justice just days after he traded the five Taliban terrorists for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.  Can you think of a larger injustice than that to those who lost life, limb, and loved ones to 9-11, both wars, and any other terrorist attack?  Can you think of messier spit in the eye to the American people for sacrificing their fellow citizens and ponying up trillions to fund a war to stop the terrorists, and those who supported and harbored them, only to have it all squandered with the undeserved liberation of those guaranteed to rejoin and lead the jihad?

It doesn’t take a genius to see how ludicrous Obama’s words are about  bringing terrorists to justice and doing “whatever it takes to see that justice is done when people harm Americans” when he has just released five committed terrorists with a high risk of recidivism.  His actions clearly demonstrate that he hasn’t done whatever it takes to see that justice is done when others have harmed Americans.  Quite the opposite.

I’m sorry, but one good thing just doesn’t wipe away one really, really bad thing.
