First they came for the canaries

In the days before highly sensitive instruments could monitor humanly undetectable poisons in the air, coal miners would bring canaries with them as they descended into the closed mines.  Delicate and sensitive, canaries would keel over and die when there were just small amounts of noxious gases present, alerting the miners to the potential dangers  who would quickly leave the mine while trying remove the causes and clear the air.

In Europe, in the Muslim world, the Jews are the canaries but unlike the clever miners who confronted the problem and tried to remove its causes, the Europeans, the Muslims are blaming the victims, their usual scapegoat--the Jews--but ignoring the cause of the noxious presence and doing little prevention.  And so, as problems came to a violent head in France this week the Europeans slowly began to realize the problem was not limited to the Jews but has quickly spread to the rest of Europe.  Sweden, Germany and England all have problems with their immigrant Muslim populations--refusal to integrate, hostility to the host countries, increased violence against others and no go zones--where the police and other government officials just won't enter.

France has a long, ugly history of appeasement, hoping to confine the problem.  During World War ll they capitulated quickly to the Nazis, co operated with them in general (tales of their famed Resistance are inflated) and happily rounded up all the Jews their German overlords asked for. http://www.yadvashem.org/yv/en/holocaust/france/deportations.asphttp:

France also has a long, ugly history of colonizing Muslim countries in North Africa such as Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia which ended violently and bitterly over 50 years ago.  After the French finally left most of the remaining Jews in those countries moved to Israel while many others relocated to France.  Muslims from these countries also moved to France, where now an estimated five million live.  While many are law abiding, a large minority are not.  While lashing out at the French in general, they have been particularly towards the Jews.  Bombings of Jewish schools, synagogues, restaurants and other Jewish institutions are regular occurrences as are murders and abductions.

Indeed, two of the victims of the slaughter at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were Jewish; the terrorist assassins knew this.

While French authorities cluck, cluck over the Muslim attacks on Jews, their preventive efforts and police and legal response to help is often minimal.

As a result, French Jews are questioning whether to remain; some are beginning to leave for Israel while others are moving to French speaking Montreal or other countries.

The events of the past week should be a wake up call to the French and the others that they are not immune.

As the Lutheran anti Jewish pastor Martin Niemöller noted 70 years ago

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Although it was too late, Niemöller repented and apologized and did his best to make amends.

The French--and others--have been warned.  They too are vulnerable; the time to protect all their populations is now.
