The Earth will be destroyed in 3 minutes

Do you know what an idiot savant is?  An idiot savant is someone who is brilliant in one area but quite dumb in most others.  The not-so-good people at The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists are idiot savants.  They may know particle theory like the back of their hands, but I wouldn't trust them to give me a haircut or tie my shoelaces.

The reason I say this is because their much-hyped "doomsday clock," which tells how close we are to the Earth being destroyed, has just moved from five minutes to detonation to three minutes to detonation.  Here's what the assorted nuts who run this respected organization had to say about it:

Unchecked climate change, global nuclear weapons modernizations, and outsized nuclear weapons arsenals pose extraordinary and undeniable threats to the continued existence of humanity, and world leaders have failed to act with the speed or on the scale required to protect citizens from potential catastrophe. These failures of political leadership endanger every person on Earth.” Despite some modestly positive developments in the climate change arena, current efforts are entirely insufficient to prevent a catastrophic warming of Earth. Meanwhile, the United States and Russia have embarked on massive programs to modernize their nuclear triads — thereby undermining existing nuclear weapons treaties.

So imaginary global warming is moving the Earth closer and closer to destruction.  As we know, there hasn't been any global warming for 16 years, and last year, there was either slight or no warming.  Even if there were warming (man-made or otherwise) it would be hundreds of years before the rise in temperature is a significant threat.  But in part because of this imaginary fear, the doomsday clock moves forward.

What's most interesting about this statement is not what it says, but what it doesn't say.  The U.S. and Russia, which already have nuclear arsenals, are said to be posing a greater threat merely by modernizing their weapons systems.  There is no logic or explanation for this.  But completely unmentioned are successful efforts by Pakistan, North Korea, and Iran to develop nuclear weapons.

We get it.  They're lefty scientists.  And they wouldn't be the first.  J. Robert Oppenheimer was strongly sympathetic to the Soviet Union.  Even Albert Einstein said in the 1940s that it was "bad" that the United States had a monopoly on nuclear weapons and that we should give nuclear weapons to the United Nations.  Really!  That self-hating leftist perspective is why imaginary global warming ticks the atomic scientists off more than Iran getting nukes.

But it's getting harder and harder to get attention for their little clock as they keep moving up the time.

In recent years, the clock has moved the wrong direction for humanity.  After standing at 17 minutes to midnight in 1991 – the farthest it's ever been from the end of the world – it's gotten closer each time it's been changed since, with the exception of 2010, when it was pushed back by one minute to 11:54 p.m.

Now that it's only 3 minutes to midnight, what can they do next?  Make it 11:59 if a Republican gets elected president?  Make it 11:59:45 if it gets one one hundredth of a degree warmer next year?

They're getting very much like the boy who cried "wolf!"

Pedro Gonzales is editor of Newsmachete.com , the conservative news site.  When President Obama was re-elected, he set his doomsday clock to 11:59:58.
