What's behind Debbie Wasserman Schultz's over-the-top attack on Marco Rubio

The head of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, turned up her obnoxious dial to ten yesterday and launched an all out attack on Marco Rubio. Appearing on MSNBC’s “The Rundown with Jose Diaz-Balart,” she revealed how much the DNC fears Rubio. Breitbart summarizes: (video below)

“I see him as a flat earth society worshiper. They’re going to try to portray him as some kind of new and fresh face. He’s nothing more than the same old tired Republican policies that he’s embraced. He’s called increasing the minimum wage silly. He has suggested that paycheck fairness for women is a waste of — fight for paycheck fairness is a waste of time. He supports increasing taxes on the middle-class and his tax plan that he released is, again, just a Replication of more of the same. Tax cuts for the wealthiest most fortunate Americans. So if you want to put what is essentially a prune and package some tinsel around it, that does not make you fresh and new.”

She continued her assault on the junior Florida Republican by calling him a “guy who says — who represents the state of Florida, who lives in South Florida, can see the flooding that occurs on Ocean Drive when there is a huge amount of rain, to continue to be a climate change denier is not fresh and new.”

“He’s more of the same and to add insult to injury, to have walked away from his own comprehensive immigration reform,” she added. “If Marco Rubio couldn’t even hack the pressure from the right wing Tea Party extremists after he embraced and authored and helped push through comprehensive immigration reform in the senate, a little pressure on him and walked away and folded like a house of cards, how will he hack the presidency?”

Richard Baehr comments:

The ferocity of DWS’s response suggests some trepidation about a Rubio run. Clearly, DWS will be the attack dog on both Jeb and Rubio, as the Florida surrogate for Hillary. If Florida leans to the GOP, and probably that is the case only with these two candidates, then GOP has a base of 235, and needs 35 from Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin.  All of these are tossups or slight Democrat-leaning, I think.

Obama outperformed in Wisconsin in the 2008 primary, burying Hillary by 20 points (especially noteworthy since there are few blacks in the state), and won by 13 over McCain and 7 over Romney-Ryan. Hillary will way underperform Obama in the state.  Gore won by 5,000 in 2000, and 10,000 in 2004.  Wisconsin should not be considered a blue wall state. If walker runs, I think he wins the state. Other top GOP contenders have a decent shot at it.
