Trump says Hillary would have been thrown into Jail if a Republican

Donald Trump says that because of her crimes, Hillary Clinton not only should not be allowed to run for President, but she would have been be thrown in jail if she were a Republican.

“I mean, honestly, she shouldn’t be allowed to run,” Trump told supporters at a campaign rally in Georgia on Saturday. “No, she shouldn’t be."

Clinton is currently being investigated by the FBI for using a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State, and questions surrounding it continue to dog her on the campaign trail.

Trump said if Clinton were a Republican, she would have already been in jail for the offense.

“I can tell you this, if that were a Republican that did what she did with the emails, they would have been in jail 12 months ago,” the businessman said.

And then Trump made a "Click" sound with his mouth, as if to evoke the image of a jail door closing in front of Hillary as she contemplates her first night in prison sharing a tiny cell with a 300 pound inmate.

This is the difference between Trump and his competition. If someone like Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio or even Ted Cruz is nominated, they may, in debates with Hillary, point out the illegality of her running a mail server for official business out of her own home. And then Hillary will reply that technically she was within the bounds of the law, or she didn't know material was classified, and so on. Viewers won't really know if she did something seriously wrong.

But if Trump is the nominee, he will, in a sentence, convey the seriousness of what she did. By saying Hillary should be in jail, he is very clearly communicating to the public that what she did was not just a technical violation but a serious offense. If he can take the battle to Hillary on that level then he will be a more than a suitable match for her.

That's why I often wish we could meld someone with the ability to deliver a concise, emotional message with someone who has a strong history of constitutional conservatism, like Ted Cruz or perhaps Bobby Jindal.  If Mitt Romney had talked like that about Obama's many illegalities, he would probably be president right now.

Thomas Lifson adds: While emotionally satisfying, perhaps, such an approach in a debate could lead to an enormous backlash, with media huffing and puffing about innocent until proven guilty. Ask Dan Burton about the effectiveness of such rhetoric.
